After our wonderful wedding and a rough few days of trying to work (our apologies to colleagues and patients during that time!), Muba and I spent New Years' in Tahiti/Moorea/Bora Bora, and then I took my first trip into the tundra of Edmonton. Our honeymoon was spectacular and a much-needed break. My trip to Edmonton was great, but COLD! Below zero temperatures and snow - it'll take some getting used to.

Patient Story of the Month

Chol Pak and I were at the VA one night in November admitting an elderly white male who apparently was a frequent flyer. When we first walked in the examination room I asked, "Sir, why did you come to the ER tonight?" He replied "Vagina." Not sure if I heard him correctly I repeated my question "You came here for what?" He again said, "I'm here for vagina." As I began to tell him that he has come to the wrong place for that he then blurted out "Oh, I mean angina." Apparently, the elderly male was enough of a frequent flyer for chest (wall) pains that he thought he'd give a shot at the medical terminology. I was laughing so hard I had to step out of the exam room twice during the H&P.

John and I just returned from a relaxing trip to the Maine coast. We flew into Boston, rented a car and it was an easy drive to Kennebunkport. What a picturesque town! While we were there, there was a big Nor'eastern storm- the winds were around 40mi/hr and the sea was angry- but we kept warm by the fireplace and enjoyed reading books and eating "lobsta".

As you might know, Sonal delivered a bouncing baby boy last month. To help her celebrate, we are collecting gift cards to Target, grocery stores, etc. for a basket to deliver to her. These come in handy for diapers, clothes, formula, and other necessities!

Ladies' Sunday Night Book Club

For those ladies and wives interested, we will be starting a monthly book club to meet once a month to eat, drink and chat about a selected book. We will be meeting on a Sunday night each month at the Bronte Cafe in Davis Kidd bookstore (they have great food and good wine selection).

If this sounds like fun, please join us for the inaguaral session on October 15th at 6pm! Please let me know if you are coming so that I can make reservations for us- if the group is very big, we may think about splitting into smaller book club groups after this session to get more out of the experience and have a wide variety of books that we can choose to read and have groups about.

The first selection is The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards which is available in paperback at most bookstores.

Hi Everyone!
Hope the fall is treating you well. It's finally October, although it does not feel that way outside. How quickly the first three months flew by!

If you did not know, it is Ramadan as well. Many of our residents are fasting during this time and gathering at night to break the fast. I would like to hear from anyone who could write something to help those of us that may not know the significance of this Religous holiday or would just like to share thier reflections on Ramadan. I'm sure that there are many residents who are curious to know more.

Last month was slow for news, but got a few things in....

Felicia Marries Claude!

CONGRATULATIONS to Felicia Lewis who married Claude Bailey on September 2nd! The wedding was beautiful and the reception was at the Botanical Gardens. The happy couple just got back from a week long honeymoon to Hawaii (would like to have some of those pics, girl). If you don't know, Felicia and Claude are proof that a long-distance relationship during residency can work- he lives in Dallas. Felicia will be moving there in the spring to join him, as she will be finishing her last year here. We're happy for you and wish you all the best.

Just wanted to let you know that we were able to donate $125 to our UT Internal Medicine Heart Walk team from the money that we made from polo shirts.

If you haven't paid for your shirt yet, please give money to any pre-chief. The rest of the proceeds will go to paying for the costs of the shirts and any money left over will go towards the Party Fund.

Wet-Nose 5K Run and Walk Sept. 30th

A small group of people (me, Sarah Gish, and perhaps a special guest appearance by Frank-the-Tank Allan) will be getting together to run the Wet-Nose 5K Run and Walk at the end of the month. This benefits the Guardian Angel Pet Rescue. If you are worried about being slow, once again, I will tell you that my only goal for a 5K is to finish...
Also, you can walk the 5K with yourself or your pet if you wish.

Patient of the Month

We have a winner for the "Patient of the Month." Congratulations to "Stan-the homeless, crack-head, long distance runner man." This story comes from David who writes:

55 yo white guy presents with right great toe cellulitis and extension to his ankle. Developed fevers, chills the day prior to admission. The cellulitis started as a blister on his great toe that he developed while running. He runs4-6 miles/day regardless of the weather. Oh yeah, he is homeless and was checking into a rehab facility for his alcohol and crack addiction and came to the hospital from there. So basically he is a homeless, crack abuser who is also a long-distance runner. He says that he runs so he can stay in shape and he has a resting heart rate in the 40s Just thought he was worthy of mention.

This 5K is family oriented and will benefit Junior Achievement (an organization that works in high schools to teach business skills).

Join us for a Redbirds Game!
Come out and watch our Redbirds as their season is coming to an end. We have purchased 100 tickets for Friday August 25th. The game starts at 7pm. You can get tickets by contacting David or emailing pre-chiefs@hotmail.com. Residents, their families, faculty, fellows, staff all welcome! And if you are new to baseball, don't worry- there will be plenty of people around who will be glad to explain the rules and teach you the wave. Our seats are by the other teams' bullpen, so we will be able to heckle the opposing pitcher and catcher as they warm up- if everyone comes, the Birds will surely win!

I and Elvira wanted to share with everyone couple of our vacation pictures.

Two weeks ago we just got back from two-week vacation to our home city Kazan, Russia. On our way back, we stopped by Moscow for one day for sightseeing where we did some "shooting". On the first picture, I, Elvira, and our daughter Kamilya are on the famous Red Square. Second picture shows 2/3 of us in front of historical Russian display called Tsar-Pushka, a Guinness Book record (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsar_Pushka ), which is located inside of Moscow Kremlin. It was hot that day but we survived the heat and brought these pictures as a vacation evidence - thanks to six years of "pre-conditioning" in Memphis weather.

July Newsletter

As always, July is a busy month for us- new interns, new residents and hot weather in Memphis. Congratulations to Jim L., who was the first intern to show up for the first day work on Med Wards- at 5am! He was awarded with the big hand-off of hemacult cards and developer from the outgoing Med Nightfloat interns who were anxious to get to vacationing. I have never seen happier faces then those two NF interns.

Hopefully, things have gone smoothly for all the new interns and they, as well as their families, pets, etc... are adapting well to residency life.

Our first social event of the year was a Fourth of July cookout at my house hosted by Katherine, John, David and me. The rain did not keep us down- about 35 people came, including lots of young ones (see pics). There was great food, especially yummy ginger/peach pie, homemade curries and kiel and of course, hotdogs and hamburgers. We missed using the Gish's home-raised beef for the burgers this year, but maybe they will make it next year!

Also of special note this month- LEANN and GARY are engaged! Congrats to the happy couple who is planning on a summer wedding 2007.

Congratulations to Frances who adopted her first puppy, Rio. You might remember the puppy that Megan found two weeks ago who needed a home- well, I'm sure that Frances is spoiling her as we speak, because she is a sweet and precious dog. She even got to stay with Aunt Anna to play with Harry Hicks for a few days (see pic).

This morning, a few residents and friends participated in the Design-A-Wish 5K. Erin and her husband Grant, Vida, Wael and I were present to run and have some fun. Our times weren't the fastest- the winners ran it in 18 min (compared to my slow trot at 31:30), but we did a good job finishing, which was our goal. Vida even won a door prize. See pics attached. Hopefully, we will be able to continue this tradition of running and staying fit- I plan to run the Chick-fil-A 5K Sept. 4th (and if you are worried about running, not running fast enough, etc... you can always walk or just come out to support your co-workers).

I also have gotten the chance to visit and work at Clinica Esperanza the past two Saturdays. What a great thing the med students have set up! M1,2,3, and 4's come to see the patients at this clinic every Saturday morning- they also serve as translators. The residents help get the patients checked out with the UT attending who is there. The clinic is located on Broad St. at Christ Comminuty and residents are needed for only a few hours Saturday mornings. Call Ms. Betty Court for more info if you are interested. We all should make an effort to go and support the med students at least once.

The most interesting case of the month goes to a patient from a consult service who attempted to commit suicide by injecting 800 (eight hundred) units of regular insulin subcutaneously- and then he drove around town waiting for it to kick in. What I am most impressed about is that he did not end up ON the Medicine team.

As for upcoming events in August- we are putting together a Friday night at the Redbirds- more info to follow- we're hoping for Aug. 25th- families welcome. And, John T. and I have put together a residency polo shirt- the latest in the stylish line of clothing which started with the now famous fleece vest. We'll get order forms and samples out later this month. It will be $20 and is a white shirt with orange embroidery on the L chest.
